Ruling Kurdish parties fear turning into minority: MP

A former Kurdistan Region parliament member told Kurdpress in an interview that the ruling parties in Kurdistan Region are seriously afraid of losing their followers and turn into unpopular parties, stresses that the parties are very afraid of holing healthy elections.

A critic of the independence referendum of the region, held on September 25, 2017, Rabun Maarof stated that the ruling parties of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have lost their international and regional supports and are not supported by Baghdad as before and also they have lost their social status and support from the people of the region. But there are new lists and political forces in the region, such as the “New Generation,” which is able to vie against the KDP and the PUK in the parliament.

The two ruling parties are still dependent on their security and intelligence forces and have controlled governmental foundations and uses them within their goals, he said, adding that a new movement is becoming the dominant power in Baghdad which prevents the participation of the KDP and the PUK in the government and the reality would leave direct impact on the governmental organizations and foundations in the region.

He promised the people of the region would experience big changes if they stop backing the ruling parties in the upcoming elections in the region.

He further confided to Kurdpress that the region is wrestling a critical and abnormal situation and there is no strong and powerful governmental foundation in the region which is governed legally. Security forces belong to the families of Barzani and Talabani and the best way to challenge their power is through election and legal actions.

Marouf ultimately stated that the local parliament of the region has lost its credibility as it is following the policies of the ruling parties and is unable to provide the expectation of the people in the region.
