Efforts are underway to return Peshmerga forces to Kirkuk: commander

A commander of the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces in the south and west of Kirkuk province announced that efforts are underway to return the forces to Kirkuk and other disputed areas between Erbil and Baghdad.

Nouri Mohammad Ali, the commander of the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces in the south and west axis of Kirkuk, said in an interview with Nas Kurd news website that efforts continue to reach an agreement for the return of displaced Kurds and Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces to Kirkuk and other disputed areas between Erbil and Baghdad.

He added that these measures began with the recent Erbil-Baghdad agreement on Shingal and will extend to Kirkuk, Khanaqin and other areas, and that Peshmerga and Kurdish forces would return to the disputed areas from which they had withdrawn.

The commander further pointed to the conditions set by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) which had previously stated that it would not return to Kirkuk before the situation normalized, saying that the condition was to pave the way for displaced Shingal residents to return to their homes and protect their lives and property.

Nouri Mohammad Ali stated that the purpose behind the return of Peshmerga forces to Kirkuk and other disputed areas is to defend and protect the residents of these areas without any discrimination.

It should be noted that after the events of October 16, 2017 and the control of the Iraqi central government forces over Kirkuk and other disputed areas between Erbil and Baghdad, Kurdish forces and some Kurdish residents left these areas.
