Istanbul–Tehran–Islamabad railway begins operations

The Turkish Trade Ministry on Friday held a welcoming ceremony in Istanbul to mark the arrival of Pakistani trucks that used the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Road Transport Corridor, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) reported on Saturday.

The trucks departed the Pakistani port city of Karachi on Sept. 27 and reached Istanbul on Thursday, completing their 5,300 kilometer (3,293 miles) trip, AA said.

The Istanbul–Tehran–Islamabad railway or (ITI Train) is an international freight train service between the Pakistani capital Islamabad and Istanbul via Iran’s capital city Tehran.

Friday’s ceremony was attended by Pakistan's envoy to Turkey, senior Iranian officials, Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), International Road Union (IRU), Turkey's Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB), as well as various representatives of the public and private sector, AA said.

“It is an extremely important corridor for the development of our road trade with the Middle East and regional countries,” said Asli Çalık, head of department, transport and logistical systems at TOBB, according to AA.

The decision to establish the road transport corridor was made at the 8th Meeting of ECO Ministers of Transport and Communications in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat back in 2011, AA said.
