Iraqi Sunni coalition meets Masoud Barzani

A delegation from the Sunni Sovereignty (al-Siyada) Coalition which included the bloc’s leader, Khamis al-Khanjar, and the Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Mohammed al-Halbousi, met the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, on Tuesday, April 26.

An announcement from Barzani’s official website stated the meeting was held to discuss the political situation facing Iraq and the deadlock in parliament.
Barzani and the delegation agreed to work on putting an end to the stalemate and to make progress on forming the new Iraqi government, according to the announcement, NRT reported.
The Iraqi parliamentary election was held in October 2021, but the parliament session to elect a new president of the republic has been delayed a number of times due to disagreements between political factions.
These disputes primarily involve two major blocs, Saving the Homeland and the Coordination Framework.
On March 30, the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court gave a deadline of April 6 to elect a president of the republic.
