UNAMI congratulated the Eid al-Fitr occasion to all Iraqi citizens and stressed the importance of overcoming the political stalemate.

The statement added that the UNAMI remains a partner to all Iraqis.

UNAMI also asked Iraq's political leaders to "assume their responsibilities, accelerate the government formation process, observe the constitutional timeframes, and agree - without further delay to form the new government of Iraq."

Polls to elect the new Iraqi Parliament were held on October 10. However, the government has not yet been formed due to political conflicts as the Parliament failed to elect the president due to a lack of quorum, NRT reported.

Two-thirds of the members, 220 out of 329 MPs, are required to elect the president. A previous session to elect the president was postponed on February 7 due to an insufficient number of MPs present.

The political deadlock over forming the new government comes from disputes between the two major Shia political blocs, the Coordination Framework and the Sadrist Movement.
