Military delegation visits Shingal following clashes between Iraqi army, YBS

A high-level delegation from the Iraqi military arrived in Shingal on Tuesday, May 3, following clashes between the army and Shingal Resistance Units (YBS).

The delegation led by Deputy Commander of Joint Operations Lit. Gen. Abdulamir al-Shammari visited Shingal to inspect security situation in the district, according to the state news agency INA.

Clashes erupted between the Iraqi military and YBS fighters on Sunday night and lasted until Monday.

An Iraqi soldier was killed in the clashes while two YBS fighters were killed in airstrikes carried out by Iraq’s warplanes, Director of Sinune sub-district Khudeda Chuki told Esta Media Network on Monday.

With the assistance of the People’s Defense Forces (HPG), the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) military wing, Yazidis formed their own self-defense with the Shingal Resistance Units and the Shingal Women’s Units after Islamic State (ISIS) attack on the district in 2014.

In April, YBS fighters clashed with the Iraqi military in Sinune town near Shingal after Iraq’s army requested Ezdikhan Asayish (security) to hand over its base in the town.

Following the clashes, the Iraqi military deployed more troops to the area, according to Iraqi media.

“The delegation’s visit is important and will order to impose security and safety in Shingal,” spokesman of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command Tahsin al-Khafaji told INA.
