Hoshyar Zebari charged with insulting Iraqi supreme court

Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau member Hoshyar Zebari was called to the Al-Karkh investigations court in Baghdad on Tuesday, May 17, on charges of insulting the Federal Supreme Court.

A source from the court said that Zebari was summoned to the court based on a complaint filed on May 16, 2022, by a Federal Supreme Court legal representative for "insulting the court repeatedly."

Zebari was the KDP's candidate for the Iraqi presidency before being suspended by the Federal Supreme Court in February.

His suspension was due to the 2016 ruling that removed Zebari from his position as Iraqi finance minister on financial and administrative corruption charges, NRT reported.

On February 15, the Federal Supreme Court issued a verdict saying that the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) law on the independent sale of the Region's oil and natural gas was against the Iraqi constitution.

Zebari criticized the federal court's decision on the Kurdistan Region's oil and gas sector and described the ruling as a "political decision."
