Bafel Talabani elected as PUK president

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Qubad Talabani, announced Bafel Talabani as the president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) at the party’s annual forum on Saturday, May 28.

Bafel Talabani expelled his co-president, Lahur Jangi, in November 2021.
Jangi and Talabani had been elected as co-presidents of the PUK in early 2020 in reflection of the outcome of the party’s congress in December 2019.
According to NRT Qubad Talabani said during the PUK’s yearly meeting with supporters on Saturday that the event would bring all sides together.
He remarked, many predicted the party would not endure any hardships following the death of late PUK leader Jalal Talabani, but the party had been able to persevere.
He stated with Bafel Talabani as the president of the PUK, the party would be as strong as ever.
Bafel Talabani said during the forum that a congress with the PUK high officials would resolve all issues in the party and this annual forum would complete the congress.
The PUK has not held a high official congress, years after the death of the previous PUK Leader and former Iraq president, Jalal Talabani, known as Mam Jalal.
