There is no arms embargo on Turkey, says German chancellor

German chancellor Olaf Scholz said that there are currently no arms export restrictions imposed on Turkey, Deutsche Welle Turkish reported on Wednesday.

When asked whether Germany would lift the arms export restrictions imposed on Turkey after Turkey gave the green light to Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO bids, Scholz replied that There is currently no embargo, Deutsche Welle said.

In 2019, after Turkey's military operations in Syria, Germany announced that it would not allow the export of weapons “that could be used in Syria”.

The two Nordic countries had also imposed embargoes on weapons deliveries to Turkey after the Turkish incursion into Syria.

The German chancellor also said that his administration welcomed membership application of Sweden and Finland to join NATO, following the agreement reached with Turkey.

“Both countries are very suitable for our Alliance,” added Scholz, insisting that Germany would do its part for the security of its Eastern European partners.

Sweden and Finland also pledged to lift their restrictions on selling weapons to Turkey following Tuesday’s trilateral memorandum in NATO’s Madrid summit.
