Erdogan to convene supreme military council on Thursday

Turkey’s Supreme Military Council (YAS) is scheduled to convene on Thursday, August 4, under the chair of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pro-government Daily Sabah reported on Wednesday.

Promotions, extensions of terms of office or retirement, including the promotion and assignment of military generals will be discussed during the meeting of the Supreme Military Council, according to Daily Sabah.
Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Guler, Air Force Cmdr. Gen. Hasan Kucukakyuz and Naval Forces Cmdr. Adm. Adnan Ozbal are expected to maintain their positions.
Turkish President Erdogan can extend the term of the chief of general staff for a period of one year if the person in question reaches the age limit, Daily Sabah said.
If his term in office is extended, General Staff Gen. Guler will become the first chief of staff over the age of 67, after Marshal Fevzi Cakmak, the first chief of general staff of the Republic of Turkey, Daily Sabah said.
Moreover, Guler will be the first person to serve in the position for more than four years since 1990, it added.
