KRG Ministry of Natural Resources slams SOMO’s threat against oil companies

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Friday, August 26, condemned a statement issued earlier this week by Iraq’s State Organization for Marketing Oil (SOMO), which threatens legal action against companies buying crude oil from the Kurdistan Region.

The KRG Ministry of Natural Resources said SOMO’s statement was, "Nothing more than another drip in a stream of disinformation” made as part of a political battle.

According to NRT the Ministry of Natural Resources claimed the statement was against Iraq’s constitution and would "undermine the continuing good-faith dialogue between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government.”

The ministry said the letter came from lawyers who pretended to be part of Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court, which the KRG ministry does not recognize as legitimate, stating the Iraqi Council of Representatives never enacted a law "to determine the workings of the Federal Supreme Court.”

After the court ruled the Kurdistan Region’s oil and gas law was unconstitutional, the KRG issued a statement describing the decision as unjust, unconstitutional, and illegitimate on February 15.

On 4 June, the Judicial Council of the Kurdistan Region issued a further statement declaring Iraq does not have a constitutionally established Federal Supreme Court.
