In a statement on Thursday, September 1, directed to Kadhimi, who is also the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Mohammed claimed Fayyadh was a violent individual and the leader of a political party, indicating Hashd al-Shaabi stands as a politically-backed force.
"He does not have a strong personality and does not even have military experienced," Mohammed stated.
Mohammed said Kadhimi must make a decisive choice to dissolve the armed paramilitary group, which he said was "killing Iraqi people.”
He also stated all armed groups, including Hashd al-Shaabi, must be removed from the Green Zone and replaced by Iraqi security forces.
The US Treasury Department sanctioned Fayyadh in January 2021, stating he was a "leader or official of an entity … whose members have engaged in serious human rights abuse." The accusation stems from the 2019 protests when components of Hashd al-Shaabi fired at protestors in 2019," resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Iraqis," according to a statement from the treasury department.
