Barzani, Sunni leaders agree on need to form new govt before early polls

The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Mohammed al-Halbousi, the head of the al-Siyada Coalition, Khamis al-Khanjar, and the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, said a government must be formed in Baghdad before holding pre-parliamentary elections.

A statement from the Parliament Speaker's Office announced Halbousi, Khanjar and Barzani met on Sunday, September 11, to discuss the options the country has in the current political situation.
The three leaders agreed parliament should not be dissolved and that a new government was needed to overcome the political deadlock in Baghdad.
The move goes against demands from the Sadrist Movement to dissolve parliament and go ahead with pre-parliamentary elections without forming a new government.
