Iraqi parliament to vote for resignation of Speaker al-Halbousi

The Speaker of the Iraqi parliament Monday has submitted his resignation paper to the legislative chamber amid a political deadlock prolonged for nearly a year, according to the state news agency.

In a surprise move, Mohammed al-Halbosui, the Speaker of the Iraqi council of representatives has submitted his resignation to the parliament, and it will be voted for on Wednesday as the parliament is expected to convene.
An agenda released by the parliament confirmed that the chamber will convene on Wednesday. It will also elect the first deputy speaker of the Council.
Iraq has entered a political stalemate due to parties’ failure to reach an agreement to select a president and a prime minister in the parliament since an early election that was held in October last year.
The reason for the Speaker’s resignation remained unclear while Hisham al-Rkabi who is in charge of the office belonging to Head of the state of law coalition in parliament Nouri al-Maliki, on Monday said, except for the Sadrist the parties have reached an agreement and will hold a parliament session on Tuesday.
