US policy on Syria will not change with Biden: envoy

The US envoy to Syria said his country is seeking to pursue a two-party policy in Syria and the policy will not change with President-elect Joe Biden's taking of power.

Joel D. Rayburn, US Special Envoy for Syria Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs stated the US policy towards Syria will not change during Biden and both the Democratic and Republican parties welcome the current policy.

"The policy pursued in Washington over the past few years in Syria has always been a bipartisan policy. This policy has been supported by various groups," Rayburn told National News.

Rayburn outlined the policy's goals: "Fighting terrorism, especially the militants of ISIS and al-Qaeda, countering Iran's influence in Syria, and seeking a political solution according to the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, including by putting pressure on the government of [Syrian President Bashar] Assad."
