Nechirvan Barzani says referring 'green, yellow' zones weakens KRG

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Wednesday, November 2, that using the terms the "yellow” and "green zone” to refer to the two sections of the Kurdistan Region by political affiliation was inappropriate and would weaken the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) position.

Barzani spoke at the annual Middle East Research Institute (MERI) Forum in Erbil and said the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) will remain a major partner of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

He admitted problems remain between the two parties and stated solutions must be found to these issues.

The green and yellow zones refer to the flags representing the PUK and the KDP and the areas under their control.

Problems between Erbil and Baghdad

Barzani also spoke on issues between the federal government and the KRG and said it is preferable for the federal government to talk with the KRG to resolve their issues rather than go through the international community, NRT reported.

"There has been no written agreement between the Baghdad and Erbil recently," he said.

"The stability of Iraq depends on the stability of the Kurdistan Region," Barzani said said, adding that resolving the problems between the KRG and the federal government will improve Iraq’s situation and will represent an important achievement.

"I hope both sides have learned from the past," Barzani said. He stated the Kurdistan Region is Baghdad’s main partner and this partnership must be accepted.
