At least three rockets hit locations on the north side of Erbil city on Monday evening, which killed one person and wounded nine others.

Spokesperson for the Coalition Colonel Wayne Marotto said in a tweet that approximately fourteen 107 mm rockets were launched with three impacting within Erbil Airbase.”

The ministry said in a statement that the methods and techniques that were used during Monday's attack were similar to those in a previous attack on Erbil International Airport.

On September 30, a group within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) fired six rockets in the direction of the airport, which landed without causing any casualties or significant damage.

Later on Tuesday, Spokesperson for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Mahmoud Muhammad said that an “outlawed group” within the PMF was responsible for the attack.

“These acts have repeated several times because [the responsible party] is not punished. The disrupting groups gain courage to continue perpetrating terrorist acts.”

Many of the militia groups within the PMF are backed by Iran, which strongly denied any involvement.

“Iran not only strongly rejects these rumors, but also flatly condemns suspicious attempts to attribute the attack to Iran,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Tuesday.

The KRG Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs condemned the “cowardly attack” in a statement, saying that enemies and terrorists will never be able to disrupt the security of the Region.

“We emphasize that any attack on the Coalition’s forces is attack on Peshmerga [forces] and the Kurdistan [Region’s] people,” it said, adding that “we need unity and solidarity more than ever.”

Commercial flights were temporarily halted at the airport, but resumed on Tuesday.
