PUK and KDP should hold talk on Kirkuk: official

Former Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) lawmaker Shakhawan Abdula stated on Sunday, April 10, that the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) should hold a meeting to discuss the future of Kirkuk.

When the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) pushed the Peshmerga out of Kirkuk in October 2017 following the Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum, the KDP left the city and has not returned, unlike the other Kurdish parties.
The KDP has indicated that it plans to retake the control of its headquarters in the disputed city, which has been used by ISF units in the intervening years, but the move is opposed by some in the PMF.
The KDP official stressed that the people of the Kirkuk governorate want the KDP to return to the city.
Abdula further told NRT that the KDP was the only Kurdish party to have sacrificed for Kirkuk and said that its leader, Masoud Barzani, has rejected meetings with acting Governor of Kirkuk Rakan Said al-Jabouri, comparing him with former top Ba’athist official Ali Hassan al-Majid who infamously directed the genocidal Anfal campaigns.
Commenting on a recent visit to Baghdad by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to meet with senior Iraqi leaders, Abdulla said that the trip was designed to shore up the recent budget agreement and to ensure its implementation, warning against external interference that could undermine the deal.
