Joe Biden is likely to be more pro-Kurds than Trump: academic

It is likely that the new-elect US President, Joe Biden, will be more pro-Kurdish than Donald Trump," Dr. Fabrice Balanche told the KurdPress.

The election of Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate in the US presidential election, has been welcomed by Kurdish officials in Iraq and Syria. Kurdish officials have sent congratulatory messages to Joe Biden, from Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani to Mazlum Kobani, the Kurdish commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

In addition to the importance of Biden's stance towards the Kurds, especially the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdish Autonomous Administration in northern Syria, it is important to note that Biden is against Recep Tayyip Erdogan's policies towards the Kurds, especially the Syrian Kurds.

Some analysts believe that Erdogan may use the two remaining months until Joe Biden will take power and launch another attack on the Syrian Kurds. Dr. Fabrice Balanche, a Middle East and Kurdish issue researcher and professor at the Université Lyon 2 in France, expressed his ideas to KurdPress about Joe Biden's stance on the Kurds and Erdogan's possible attack on the Syrian Kurds.

“Of course the USA is weak during the next three months, especially if Trump goes to the supreme court. Joe Biden is perhaps more pro-Kurds than Trump. He was Obama vice president and it is Obama who decided to support strongly the YPG (People Protection Units) against Daesh (ISIS) in 2014,” Dr. Balanche told KurdPress about Biden’s stance towards Kurds.

“On one hand Erdogan could use the next weeks to attack Northeastern Syria if he has an agreement with Russia. Erdogan would like to show his determination like Israel against Hamas in November 2008 when Obama was elected,” he said about possible Erdogan attacks to Syrian Kurdish regions during the power transit from Trump to Biden.

The university professor, however, added that “On the other hand if Erdogan attacks Kurds I do not think Biden would appreciate the fait accompli at the beginning of his mandate and he would have an anti-Erdogan policy for the next 4 years like Obama was hostile to Netanyahu.”
