    ECtHR says Turkey arrested pro-Kurdish politicians to stifle pluralism

    The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on Tuesday ruled that Turkey had violated the rights of 13 former lawmakers from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) by putting them in pretrial detention to stifle pluralism and to limit freedom of political debate, ordering the release of two of them who are still in jail.

    The leader of Turkey’s far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahceli, has unexpectedly expressed no anger over a visit his election ally, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), paid to a pro-Kurdish party concerning a constitutional amendment guaranteeing a woman’s right to wear the Islamic headscarf, local media reported on Tuesday.
