    The power shift in north west Syria: Three consequences of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham seizure of Afrin

    In the past ten days, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)– a radical group whose leaders are former Islamic State (ISIS) and al Qaeda members – has dispatched its fighters from Syria’s Idlib province into Afrin and moved into the north capturing towns and border crossings, mostly without a fight. The areas that the HTS captured were under control of the Syrian Interim Government (SIG) and their armed forces the Syrian National Army (SNA), a pro-Turkish Syrian rebel alliance. This event was the first major exchange of territory between warring factions in two years.

    Clashes erupted between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and Faylaq al-Sham, affiliated with the Turkish-backed FSA, due to differences over the alleged opening of a commercial crossing with the Syrian government-held areas in the eastern Idlib countryside.
