Former KDP official Adham Barzani says inequality is main reason behind migration

Former Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official Adham Barzani on Friday, November 12, blamed economic inequality for why young people in the Kurdistan Region are deciding to migrate.

"I believe that the youth of Kurdistan should be provided with an economic stability and a decent life, which will make the youth to serve the country and help it develop,” said Barzani, who is a cousin of KDP leader Masoud Barzani and former leader of the KDP in Sulaimani.

"There should be no difference between people with power, authority, wealth and poor people and every person in this country should be respected so that the people reconcile with the life of this country once again,” he added.

If inequality is not resolved, "an unwanted future awaits us,” he was quoted by NRT as saying.

Thousands of migrants from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are currently stranded on the Poland-Belarus border, with the European Union accusing Minsk of engaging in "hybrid warfare” by encouraging migrants to travel to Poland and Lithuania via its territory.

Many say that disillusionment with political and economic conditions in the Region are why they decided to leave, with some specifically blaming the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) who have been in charge since 1991.
