Biden's adviser says US should help resumption of Kurdish peace process in Turkey

The national security adviser to the US president-elect believes that Turkey should accept cooperation between the United States and the Syrian Kurds until the end of the fight against ISIS and the United States must also help resume the Kurdish-Turkish peace talks.

US President-elect Joe Biden has named two key members of his cabinet, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. The two are among those who have made many statements in the past about the Kurdish issue and the US relation to it. Anthony Blinken has stressed on the need for limited US support for the Syrian Kurds and confrontation with PKK leaders.

But Jake Sullivan, the National Security Adviser to US President-elect Joe Biden, believes his country needs to take the Kurdish issue more seriously.

He said on the sidelines of a US Peace Institute conference two years ago that the United States should distinguish between Syrian Kurdish forces and the PKK, which Turkey believes have links to.

The advisor to Biden also said that Turkey must accept that the US support for the Syrian Kurds will continue as long as the ISIS exists, but that the Kurds should not be a military threat to Turkey.

He also stressed on the need to respect the rights of the Syrian Kurds in political decisions about Syria's future, including an agreement on limited autonomy, and advised Turkey to accept this process rationally.

Jake Sullivan believes that his country should take the Kurdish issue seriously in Turkey and help resolve the issue politically, including the resumption of the Kurdish peace talks.
