Masoud Barzani, Bafel Talabani disagree to agree on a united presidential nominee

The Saturday meeting between Massoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and Bafel Talabani, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), failed to make any agreement between the two sides over nominating a candidate to the Iraqi parliament to be selected as the next Iraqi president.

On Saturday afternoon, January 22, Massoud Barzani and Baffle Talabani met to discuss selecting the Iraqi presidency, Zemen website reported.
In a conversation about taking over the presidency of Iraq, Massoud Barzani stated that four terms of the presidency were in the PUK hands and that the political bureau of the KDP demanded that a member of the party hold the post in the forthcoming term, a news source told the website.
Barzani has also asked why the PUK ignored the KDP political bureau request to change the PUK candidate for the presidency. The PUK candidate for the post is current Iraqi President Barham Salih.
"The change of candidate will be very difficult for his party," Bafel Talabani said. "Does the KDP agree with the PUK nominating a candidate from among them (KDP)?"
"That's why they did not agree on the presidency, and both have stated that they will vote for their candidates for the post in the Iraqi parliament, and that the candidate who gets the most votes will run the presidency," the source added.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party and The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has each nominated Hoshyar Zebari and Barham Salih for the presidency, and Latif Rashid, the PUK revered Leader Jalal Talabani' co- brother in law, has also been nominated for the post by the PUK.
