Iraq asks Iran to explain on Sunday Erbil attack

The Ministerial Council for National Security held a meeting headed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Sunday, March 13, to discuss the ballistic missile attack on Erbil, the PM’s media office said.

The security council said it sent a request for an explanation to Iran through diplomatic channels and is awaiting a response from the country’s leadership.
The council stated the missile strike, which launched from Iranian territory, was an attack on the historic relationship between the two neighboring countries and a violation of international laws and norms.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a press release that Iran’s ambassador in Baghdad was summoned and informed of the Iraqi government’s protest over the incident.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the strikes targeted a Zionist "strategic center,” Tasnim News Agency said on Sunday.
The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior said 12 long-range ballistic missiles were launched toward Erbil from the east, outside the Region and Iraqi territory.
A statement from the ministry said the attack resulted in material damage to buildings and homes.
The Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, said in a press conference two people sustained minor injuries due to the missile strikes, adding none of the rockets hit the US consulate but instead fell in surrounding areas, according to Iraqi News Agency.
