Turkey attacks on northeast Syria will revive ISIS cells: party leader

Thamer al-Shammari, head of the Future Syria Party in Deir ez-Zor, east Syria, said on Sunday, May 1, that the recent escalation of the Turkish attacks on northeast Syria has revived ISIS cells in the region and fueled their ambition to resurge.

The Turkish forces and affiliated opposition forces have recently intensified their military escalation in several areas in northeast Syria by bombing the population and infrastructure in the countryside of Raqqa and Hasaka.

“The state of tension created by the Turkish bombing poses a real danger to the region, and paves the way for ISIS cells to intensify their operations, and this is what Turkey seeks to strike the stability of the region,” al-Shammari said.

“The recent ISIS operations in the region are clear evidence of this. Turkey is bombing from the outside and ISIS is attacking and implementing from inside,” according to al-Shammari.

In October 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a ceasefire agreement following the Turkish invasion of areas of northeast Syria.
