Turkey jets bomb Barzan region for first time since renewed military operation

Turkish warplanes bombed Sherine Mountain near Balinda village in Erbil’s Barzan area on Wednesday morning, December 29, according to local reports.

The airstrike occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. but damage assessments were not yet available, NRT reported.

It is the first time the Turkish warplanes have hit the Barzan area during the latest round of military operations in the Kurdistan Region and northern Iraq that began in June. At least twelve civilians have been killed in airstrikes since then.

Turkey justifies its operations as necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has its headquarters in the Kurdistan Region.

Barzan is the ancestral home of the Barzani tribe whose members include many prominent leaders in the Kurdistan Region including the current Kurdistan president, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) prime minister, and the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The authorities have not yet commented on the airstrike.
