Turkish jets bomb villages in Qandil

Turkish warplanes bombed targets near Aliarash, Zewka, Ganamawi, and Bepala villages in the foothills of Qandil Mountain on Thursday, December 31, according to a local official.

Manager of Zharawa sub-district Abdulla Abas told NRT that the extent of the damage is not yet known.

No casualties were immediately reported.

Turkey has been conducting intense military operations in the Kurdistan Region and northern Iraq, with the latest round beginning on June 15. Ankara says that the operations are necessary to protect itself from attacks by Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters.

At least twelve civilians have been killed in airstrikes since then.
